A Story Woven by Hand
In a small Amazigh village near Marrakech, weaving is more than a craft.
It is a skill passed from one generation to another, a way of working together, and a source of opportunity for the women of our community.
This is the story of ASBED Cooperative.
Where it Began
Our cooperative was born in 2022, started by local women who wanted to shape their own future through weaving. We began with very little, but with a lot of determination. Working together allowed us to keep our village's tradition alive while earning a fair income for our families.
The Women Behind the Loom
Our cooperative is alive because of the women who gather here every single day. Each artisan brings her own patience, creativity, and wisdom passed down through hands and family. To us, they are not just making rugs—they are the heart of everything we do.
Rooted in Our Village
This landscape is part of who we are. Our cooperative is rooted in an Amazigh village in the Al Haouz region, about 40 km from Marrakech, along the road to Ouarzazate. Our work takes place within the community where our artisans live, surrounded by the everyday life, traditions, and landscapes that have shaped their way of weaving. Visitors who come here do not simply see finished rugs. They can meet the women, see the looms, and experience the place where each piece begins.
A Craft That Takes Time
We weave every rug by hand using 100% natural sheep’s wool. Long before a pattern appears on the loom, the wool is washed, prepared, and spun by hand. It takes time, and there are no shortcuts. The small differences in color or texture are not mistakes—they are proof that a real person made it with care.
Still Growing
We are still a young cooperative, and our story is far from finished. We want to create more opportunities for women in our community, strengthen our work together, and continue developing while keeping our roots in traditional weaving. We are not trying to turn a local craft into mass production. We want to grow carefully, while keeping the people, the craft, and the community at the heart of what we do.
